Monday Morning QBFS

It's Monday, June 5th 2023, let's take dive into what happened over the weekend in Philly Sports.

Flyers

The NHL announced that NJ will host its first outdoor stadium series in February 2024, where the Devils will face off against the Flyers. The Flyers' social media team tried to get cheeky by tweeting at the Eagles, asking if they could borrow Boston "Giant Killer" Scott due to his success in that stadium. The ensuing fan reactions were brutal, roasting the Flyers' social media team. Some replies mocked the timing, saying, "That's around the time of the parade, Scott won't be able to make it." Others took a more critical tone, stating, "He'd be the best player on the team, and he doesn't even know how to skate." Ouch.

NBA Championship

The Miami Heat tied up the championship series 1-1 on Sunday, dashing the hopes of those who predicted a Nuggets sweep. The next two games will take place in Miami, giving the Heat home court advantage. While we primarily focus on Philly sports here, we can't help but secretly admire Jimmy Butler. Go ahead and @ me.

The Birds

OTA's are in full swing as we inch closer to football season. Meanwhile, the Kelce Bros are hosting the inaugural New Heights Beer Bowl in Sea Isle City on June 28th, a charity event where participants submit creative videos related to beer. We're considering entering and welcome any video ideas!

Revisiting the potential Russell Wilson trade between the Seahawks and the Eagles that was revealed last week, it turns out the Eagles would have had to give up a lot:

  • Jalen Hurts
  • Josh Sweat
  • 2022 first-round picks (15 and 18)
  • 2023 first-round pick (Nolan Smith was drafted here)
  • 2025 second-round draft pick

That would also mean, no AJ Brown, no Jordan Davis, and no Jalen Carter, as the Eagles wouldn't have traded with New Orleans in 2022. This deal was undoubtedly steep, and we're thankful to Russell Wilson for turning it down.

The Phils

June is Kyle Schwarber's month, and we may start seeing the veteran bats heating up. In the recent series against the last-place Nationals, the Phillies showed signs of bouncing back. They won two out of three games, scoring a total of 22 runs. It's good to see Drew Ellis and Kyle Schwarber contributing with two homers each, and J.T. Realmuto going deep for the second straight game in Sunday's 11-3 victory.

The Sixers

As Nick Nurse settles into his new role at Wells Fargo Center, fans anxiously await James Harden's decision. Some suggest he may be heading back to Houston, while others speculate that Nick Nurse has a plan to convince Harden to stay in Philly from an X's and O's standpoint. Rumors circulate about potential trades, with Tobias Harris being the subject of talks. One scenario involves Harris returning to his former team, the Los Angeles Clippers, in exchange for depth pieces like Eric Gordon, Marcus Morris Sr., and a 2023 2nd-round draft pick. There's a sense of uncertainty as we watch the NBA championship from our couches, wondering what changes lie ahead for the team.

On a less positive note, assistant coach Sam Cassel recently left the Sixers to join our arch-rivals, the Boston Celtics. His move raises concerns about the strategic advantage Boston might gain, given Cassell's familiarity with our young star, Tyrese Maxey. It's certainly a questionable move on his part.

Today, we celebrate Mark Wahlberg's 52nd birthday, which holds significance for Philly sports. Wahlberg portrayed Vince Papale in the movie "Invincible," inspired by the real-life Philadelphia legend. Moreover, Wahlberg gave a speech on the art museum steps during the Pope's visit in 2015, concluding it with a resounding "Go Eagles!" The fact that he turns 52 aligns with our Super Bowl 52 victory. Legends indeed. Happy Birthday, Mark.
